Subliminal Messages

Subliminal messages are similar to affirmations in that they are statements of truth aimed at your subconscious mind. The difference lays in how you present them to your senses.

Subliminal's are recorded on some type of media like tapes, CD's, or MP3's. The actual verbal message or visual message is set at a level that your conscious perceptions are unable to hear or see them. This is called subliminal messaging.

People in search of success through self-help spend millions of dollars a year on subliminal messaging products. This is powered by some very effective advertising and marketing campaigns launched various companies both online and out there in the 'real world'.

Do they work?

What most of the purchasers of subliminal products have failed to do is...

....some basic research. They need to ask one particular question....

... Do these messages work?

I saw a subliminal advertising executive, but only for a second.

- Steven Wright

How it started...

Most of the companies flogging subliminal products cite the work of a market researcher - one James M. Vicary.

In 1957 he announced that he'd made a breakthrough in advertising.. ...namely subliminal's

Vicary described the results of a six week experiment that he had done in a cooperative movie theater. He claimed that a projector was was manipulated to flash "drink coke", and "eat popcorn" on the screen for 1/3000th of a second every five seconds.

Vicary claimed that the result was that popcorn sales went up 57.5 percent over the six weeks; Cokes sales were up 18.1 percent.

In the following years, Vicary refused to release any of his data including the location of the theater where the tests were supposedly done. Other scientists tried to duplicate his work but could not produce anything similar to what he claimed.

Results

When challenged to reproduce his findings Vicary agreed to conduct a publicly announced test on CBC stations. In January 1958, the subliminal message "telephone now" was flashed 352 times during a half-hour show.

The results showed no noticeable increase in telephone use during or after the program. However, the CBC received thousands of letters claiming inexplicable desires to get a can of beer, to go to the bathroom, and to change the channel.

Not one single caller correctly guessed what the subliminal message was.

Reality Check

Given that subliminal messaging didn't work, the advertising industry denounced it. Subliminal message ads were banned by all major networks and by the National Association of Broadcasters in June 1958.

The American Psychological Association announced that subliminal ads were "confused, ambiguous, and not as effective as traditional advertising"

And with that, the controversy was laid to rest.

In 1962 Vicary was interviewed by Advertising Age and he called his own findings and claims a "gimmick". He also revealed that his company, the Subliminal Projection Company, had been dissolved.

If in fact subliminal's do have some effect, there are some other questions that the wise consumer should be asking:

  • Are the messages you want really on the recording?
  • What affirmations are actually on the recording?
  • Are there messages on the recording you don't want?
  • Of course everyone has a certain degree of cynicism and skepticism when it comes to something as nebulous as subliminal messaging. So what can be done? The obvious solution is to do a personal test. The easiest way to do this is create your own subliminal recordings.

Have someone you trust (a lot) record some subliminals on a CD or MP3. It could be foreign words or messages that require a particular action you don't currently engage in.

Listen to the recordings for 30 days - do you now know several foreign words that you never knew before? Did you start exercising regularly for no particular reason? Did you stop smoking? If nothing happened the obvious conclusion is that subliminal messages do not work.

If you haven't the time or inclination to experiment like this simply ask everyone you know if they've ever tried subliminal products for a given purpose. Then ask if it worked for them. If you want to really experience radical success in whatever goal you have your sights set on...

Forget subliminal messages and try affirmations combined with brainwave entrainment.
