S.M.A.R.T. Goals

Smart goals. Who hasn't heard of the S.MA.R.T. goal setting model? If you have not, take a look at some goal setting theory. If you are like most people, you read all the information about S.M.A.R.T. goal setting and you agree with it, hit the back button, and look for something else. The information leaves you cold. Ever wonder why?

The answer might just lead you to the place where you can experience the joy and power of goal setting. In life, you are going to hit what you aim for. If you aim for nothing - you're going to hit nothing. If you aim for a challenging target - you're going to hit that.

The S.M.A.R.T. Goals model is an acronym. It looks like this:

S = Specific / Significant
M = Measurable / Meaningful
A = Attainable / Achievable / Acceptable
R = Realistic / Relevant / Reasonable
T = Timely / Trackable

Does that get you excited? Does it motivate you? Do you feel powerful after reading that? Does it seem like a light has come on, like you've just had an epiphany? No? Not surprising. Achieving goals is all about motivation. A 'S.M.A.R.T. Goal' that isn't smart, isn't smart. Or put it another way - S.M.A.R.T. Goals that don't arouse your passions are dead goals, goals that will be left to rot under the scorching sun of mediocrity.

Empowering Smart Goals

The key to setting and achieving S.M.A.R.T. Goals is to set goals that motivate you. Goals that arouse your passion that get you excited. Goals that spring into your mind when you wake up first thing in the morning. Goals that dominate your conversation that make your eyes sparkle when you think about them. Anything less isn't a goal it's just a chore.

Confusion of goals and perfection of means seems, in my opinion, to characterize our age.

- Albert Einstein

Just because a goal is specific doesn't guarantee that it will drive you to achievement. Lets use the example of a weight loss goal. Specifically - you wasn't to burn off 30lbs of fat. You look in the mirror see the excess weight and tell yourself you must lose 30 pounds in 20 weeks. That's a specific goal. Motivating? No.

Losing 30 pounds in 20 weeks is measurable. All you need to prove it is a bathroom scale, and a tape measure. Day one - you step on the scale, then measure your pertinent parts and record them in your journal. Motivating? Hardly, more like depressing. A lot of weight to loose, and a long time to go. *sigh*

Losing 30 pounds in 20 weeks is most definitely attainable. It works out to 1.5 pounds a week very do-able. Does that inspire you? *yawn*.

Losing 30 pounds in 20 weeks is realistic. Unless you have debilitating health problems you could easily lose 1.5 pounds a week. Even with simple adjustments you could do this. Will you? Probably not.

Losing 30 pounds in 20 weeks is a good time frame and very trackable. So what? Does that get you out of your normal routines? Does that encourage you to change your diet? Get some exercise? Unlikely.

If you want to empower your goals make them motivating.

Smart Goals are Motivating.

How do you make your goals motivating? Your attitude towards your goal or goals is everything. Smart goals require smart attitudes. The good news is that anyone can create good attitudes. Here's a few things you can do to make your smart goals smart:

A concrete goal is one you can visualize. So make your goal concrete. Make it something that you can see, feel, touch, taste, etc. Make your goal something you can actually do something about.

Goals solve problems - solve one problem at a time. If your goal is to become wealthy and fit you are trying to kill a flock of seagulls with one stone. Now killing a flock of seagulls may be done with a big enough stone the prospect of heaving that stone is not going to motivate you. Break down your goals into bite-sized pieces. It's much more likely that you'll get excited over doing something that you know you can do within a short amount of time and without herculean effort.

Think about the results. Think about the end result of your goal. Think about the how it will look, feel, be. Think about all the positive effects of achieving your goal. If you over think the individual steps too much, you will become overwhelmed and de motivated. Keep the prize in mind. Keep it there until you feel the fires of passion start to burn and then keep it there to fuel those fires of passion.

Just like the previous paragraph think about what life will be like after you've attained your smart goal. Imagine what will happen after your goal is complete. If you do this effectively, you may find that the goal you thought you wanted isn't what you want at all and you may find yourself setting a goal that you really want.

Smart goals are external. They exist out there in the real world. Internal touchy-feely goals are ghosts. You can't grab them and nail them down.

Ultimate Smart Goal Setting Tool

The ultimate smart goal tool is your mind. All things in your world are colored by your mind. Your attitudes determine your motivation and your motivation in turn, determines the success or lack of it that you experience in setting and achieving goals. To become a highly motivated goal achieving machine, you need to think thoughts that are conducive to producing results.

If your mind does not think the kinds of thoughts that lead you to setting and achieving goals, there is hope! Hope in the fact that you can change the way your mind operates. You can reprogram it. The best way to program your mind is though affirmations. And the best way to use affirmations is to combine them with brainwave entrainment.
