ADD ADHD Attention Deficit and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

ADD ADHD prevents the focus and concentration necessary to get the most out of education, to be the most productive in a work environment, to establish and maintain healthy lasting relationships, and to feel good about one's self as a person.

Attention deficit hyperactive disorder makes many facets of life that most people take for granted, a challenge to those who have to learn to deal with it.

ADD ADHD is the most intensely studied mental disorder in children. It is also the most common disorder in children. Somewhere in the region of 3 - 5 % of children around the world are afflicted with this condition. It usually starts before age 7 and for half of those who had it as kids, it remains into adulthood. Boys tend to develop the condition in greater numbers than girls do.

Because children can behave childishly it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between 'kid behaviour' and ADD ADHD. If symptoms are few and tend to only show up on occasion, it probably isn't a mental disorder so much as it is just 'kid behaviour'.

Misconceptions About ADD ADHD

  1. Everyone with ADHD is hyperactive.
  2. Some who have this disorder are high energy / high activity people. But many who have challenges with attention are not. Those who have ADD but are not hyper may seem to be unmotivated and not quite 'there'.
  3. No one with ADHD can ever focus and concentrate
  4. It is common for people with ADHD to be able to concentrate and focus on activities they are passionate about and enjoy doing. The trouble comes when the task they are presented with is repetitive and / or boring.
  5. People with ADHD are obnoxious intentionally
  6. People with ADD ADHD may be trying their utmost to behave well but are unable to sit still, keep quiet, and pay attention. This may look like disobedience but doesn't mean they're misbehaving on purpose.
  7. Children with ADHD will grow out of it
  8. As noted above 30 - 50% of those who have the disorder as children will have it as adults. If you have a child who has been diagnosed with the disorder, don't wait for them to outgrow the condition - get help now. With help your child can learn to manage the condition and minimize the symptoms.
  9. Medication is the best solution
  10. This is a cultural mistake. Medication is usually given to children who have been diagnosed with ADD ADHD, but it may not be the best option for your child. The drugs used to combat this condition can have very serious side effects.

Diagnosing ADD ADHD properly can be a challenge. Just because a child is impulsive, active, inattentive and disobedient does not mean they have ADD or ADHD. In order to accurately diagnose the condition, other conditions need to be excluded from the diagnosis.

A mental health expert can help to eliminate the following:

  • Stress
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Psychological disorders
  • These can include but aren't limited to: depression, manic depression (bipolar disorder), and anxiety
  • Discipline problems
  • Medical Conditions
  • These can include but aren't limited to: neurological conditions, epilepsy, Tourette's syndrome, thyroid conditions, and sleep deprivation
  • Symptoms of ADD ADHD

If you are seeing some behaviour in your child and you are concerned that s/he may have ADD ADHD there are three main symptoms to look for:

  • Inattention
  • Hyperactivity
  • Inattention and hyperactivity
  • Kids who don't present with hyperactivity are often overlooked as they seldom draw attention to themselves with their behaviour. In practical terms inattention may show up as

  • not following instructions / directions
  • not following the rules in games and classroom settings
  • not applying themselves scholastically
  • Positive Characteristics of ADD ADHD

Some positive traits associated with ADD ADHD are:

  • Energy, drive and ambition
  • Flexibility
  • Optimism, Spontaneity, Enthusiasm
  • Creativity
  • ADD ADHD has nothing to do with intelligence or talents. Many children who are challenged by this disorder are above average in intelligence and creativity.

    Alternate Treatment for ADD ADHD

ADD ADHD is a slow wave brain disorder. People who struggle with this condition are likely unaware of what is happening to the brain. Brainwave entrainment is a wonderful solution to the slow wave brain disorder. The principles of entranment ensure that the dominant frequency of the brain is increased. When this happens the symptoms of the disorder abate and life can happen at a less frentic pace.

Affirmations for ADHD combined with brainwave entrainment is a combination that can not be beaten as a therapy for ADD ADHD.
