Fear of Success

Fear of success seems like the silliest of fears. Who would be afraid of success? Who would be afraid of the privilege and power that comes with it?

At first blush it would seem like only a handful of really warped individuals would be afraid of attaining a worthwhile goal. The fact of the matter is that most people are afraid of real success.

The reason they are afraid is that personal change requires a great deal of courage. And there are several reasons it takes courage....

Personal change means you have to take an honest look at yourself - most often what you see is not so good. You might have to admit that you are not a success - and that can hurt.

Fear of Change

It means that you will have to do things and think in ways you never have before. This forces you out of the box. It is an uncomfortable place to be. Settle for comfort and you'll settle for mediocrity at best.

Successophobia is tied to the habitual failure patterns that unsuccessful people commonly cling to...

The first failure pattern is the Self-Image of a Failure. Success means that your self image no longer holds true. This can be frightening and very uncomfortable.

The next failure pattern fear of success is that of self Doubt - "I Can't". I can't possibly be a success. Even if I attain my goal it will turn to dust in my hands.

When the student is ready....

- Buddhist Proverb

On the other hand fear of success might manifest itself in the fear that you will reach your goal, but once you get there you'll only discover that you've reached the top of the ladder only to find that the ladder is leaning on the wrong wall.

Success means removing enthusiastic connections to unsupportive actions, people & places. That sounds like a no-brainer, but consider things like TV, booze, an evening out with the gang. Most people would never give up the things they love - not even for success.

Life without those unsupportive actions, people & places is just too scary a thing to even consider.

Holding on to Fear

Fear of success means holding on to unfavorable connections to supportive actions, people & places. Thus the people who could help you and the actions that would launch you into the stratosphere become things you are deathly afraid of....

Worry - concentrating on what could go wrong is a failure pattern that is very closely linked to the fear of success. Consider that your dominant thoughts determine your outcomes and worry becomes an arch enemy....

....For instance you might worry about attaining your goal and being recognized and honored. Or you might worry that you don't have the ability to maintain your success, and all the good things you have achieved.

Perhaps there is the worry that all that you have attained might blow up and self-destruct at anytime. This is also known as disaster thinking.

Success brings with it the possibility of being overwhelmed by daily responsibilities...

.....When real life sets in and things do go wrong the failure habit of exaggerating mistakes, setbacks & delays kicks in.

Eventually, this kind of worry -the fear of success - can manifest itself in physical symptoms of the pressure and Stress you are under. You may end up with serious health issues that are nothing more than the result of stress.

Fear of success means that you are affirming that you do not deserve all the good things and acknowledgement that come your way as a result of your stellar performance.

This fear might be rooted in the suggestion that success is a goal in and of itself; yet that goal is not enough to capture your passion on a long term basis or that your motivation to continue will fade.
