What is Success?.

What is success? The usual concept of achievement in life is money...

"For me it is being extremely wealthy"
"I consider it to be getting to the top of the corporate ladder"
"When I get my star on Hollywood Boulevard.."
“To graduate at the top of my class”

The dictionary defines it like this .....

suc·cess (suk-sĕs')
n. The achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted: attributed their success in business to hard work.
  1. The gaining of fame or prosperity
  2. The extent of such gain.
  3. One that is successful: The plan was a success.
  4. Obsolete. A result or an outcome.
[Latin successus, from past participle of succēdere, to succeed.

The essence of achievement is hitting your target right smack in the middle of the bull's eye. Confusion starts when you have to decide exactly what the bull's eye is.

So What is Success really about?

The way you define success is really up to you. However, while the dictionary defines success as simply hitting a target, success isn't merely accomplishing something -- although you won't be successful without accomplishing something -- No, success is something that transcends attaining a goal.

Any worthwhile answer to the question 'what is success' must include the quality or the character of the goal. True success, real success comes when you attain a goal that is morally right, and worthy of attaining.

Success must be the constant fulfillment of goals that are powered by passion that must not and never will be denied. This is success at it's deepest and most meaningful level. Those who attain this place are empowered by success, rather than merely chasing it.

Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.

- Booker T. Washington

Does that seem a bit confusing? Too philosophical? Let's break it out a bit differently. Suppose you decided to blow up a famous land mark. You plan, plot, organize and work with enthusiasm and passion to reach your goal. Things go well for you and according to plan you manage to blow up your target.

Have you succeeded? Well, according to the dictionary - yes. According to the principles of goal setting - yes. But have you really? What is success? Blowing up a land mark or any other act of violence and terror can be done but it certainly doesn't fall into the category of a worthy or moral goal, does it?

Achieve success

Regardless of how you answer the question, you still have to do something. Success by it's nature connotes action. You will have to decide what to do - a goal. Then actually do it! The worst possible choice you can make is to plant your butt into a comfy chair and allow the TV to hypnotize your life away.

What is your dream?

What would you like to succeed at? Do you have a personal goal? Would you like to be a better salesman? Would you like to quit smoking? Burn off your excess fat? What do you need to succeed? Do you need more confidence? Self - esteem?
