Strategy? What's that got to do with weight loss? Well, a strategy is the science or art of combining and employing the methods of war in planning and directing large military movements and operations.

1. Make a commitment

There is no such thing as a quick fix. It took time to get out of shape, it's going to take time and effort to get back into shape. If you read some garbage online that you can lose 30 pounds a week -- it's a lie.

    Walk 5 miles a day. Good goal --but it isn't realistic -- you're just starting out, give yourself a chance.

    Walk 30 minutes a day. Good goal -- but what are you going to do if something interferes with your walk? This goal is inflexible.

    Walk 30 minutes a day 5 days a week. Now this is a goal that meets all the requirements; it is specific, attainable, and flexible.

    You will need to set weekly, monthly, yearly goals. And don't forget to manage your expectations. This strategy is going to have ups and downs. An unexpected weight gain is no reason to give up. There are going to be peaks and valleys on your journey -- expect them and plan for them.

     

    3. Find emotional support

    When you enter the valleys you will need support. Most experts will tell you to lean on your family or friends. That's great if they are 100% supportive, but if they have their own weight problems...

    Find yourself some people who are like minded, who have their own strategies for weight loss, get near some people who are as determined to get lean as you are. Get your support and encouragement from them -- they will understand where you are and why you feel the way you do.

    You have to walk this path under your own power but you don't have to walk it alone.

    4. Learn to enjoy healthier foods

    5. Get active, stay active
