Sleep related Eating Disorders.

Sleep related eating disorder is defined as having unusual or uncommon eating habits during the night.

When this disorder shows up in someone who is sleepwalking it is called NS-RED. Nocturnal sleep related eating disorder is not as common as sleepwalking but does happen. People who do this eat while they are asleep. They will walk to the kitchen, prepare and eat food without the slightest memory of it when they awake. Should this happen often enough the individual might experience weight gain and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

 

NES or night eating syndrome, is when someone eats at night while they are fully awake. They usually eat because they can not fall asleep unless they have eating. Just like NS-RED if this habit persists the individual can expect weight gain and the risk of type 2 diabetes. NES can be accompanied by the following symptoms and usually lasts two months or longer:

  • Small or no breakfast appetite
  • Eating more food after supper than at supper
  • Consuming more than half the daily caloric intake after supper
  • Recurring awakenings that require the intake of food before sleep can resume
  • NS-RED and NES are different in that people with NES eat while they are awake. They are similar in that similar in both are a hybrid of a sleep disorder and an eating disorder. Both disorders interfere with a person's good nutrition, can cause emotional distress, and cause weight gain.

    Who can get a Sleep Related Eating Disorder?

    NS-RED and NES attacks either sex, but are more common among women. Approximately between 1 and 3 percent of the general population has this problem. Interestingly 10 to 15 percent of those with eating disorders also struggle with sleep eating disorders.

    A common trait is to diet (starve) during the day to combat the problem. However, this only adds to the problem by leaving them hungry and susceptible to eating at night when control is lost due to sleep and the slower brain wave patterns associated with it. As with other disorders of the mind, some people with sleep related eating disorder are also afflicted with challenges from alcohol, drugs, and other problems.

    Treatment for Sleep Related Eating Disorders

    For a problem of this complexity, professional medical help is recommended. However, for those who want to try something on their own -- a self help approach there are some things that can help.

    A professional will want to do an interview that might include an over-night stay in a lab to examine brain activity during the night.
